Leroy Smith, 90, of Alton, Indiana, died Thursday, December 22, 2022, at Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born September 9, 1932, in Borden, Indiana, to the late John and Dora Turner Smith. Leroy attended the old Harvey Flat School near Alton and worked as a self employed drywall contractor for most of his life. He was a member of Beechwood Bible Holiness Church near English, Indiana (Carefree), attended Zoar Community Church near Corydon, Indiana, was a very active supporter of the Harrison County Holiness Association and Ramsey Camp, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Leroy was a born again Christian that loved the Lord and his church, and was always eager to share his spiritual experiences. He was saved on September 5, at the age of 36. He loved fishing and hunting and making his turkey calls and other wooden projects that he shared with his kids and grandkids. He also enjoyed hanging out at the Sulphur Store and talking to his buddies, and playing yard games with friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth Sheckells Smith; his sons, Roy L. Smith and Ryan “Josh” Smith; his granddaughter, Jessica Lowery; his brother, Robert “Bud’ Smith; and his sisters, Myrtle “Pete” O’Brien and Flossie Mae Crowe.
Survivors include his wife, Carmalette McAdams Phelps Smith; his son, Roger W. Smith (Polly) of Carefree; his daughters, Rita D. Culver (Marvin) of Alton, Rebecca “Becky Lea” Wolfe (Pete) of New Middletown, Indiana, and Reena G. Ruff (Hank) of Carefree; his grandchildren, Zachary Culver, Trenton Culver, Travis Wolfe, Krista Briscoe, Kara Carver, Kimi Wolfe, Steven Smith, Caleb Smith, Tiffany Eckert, Christopher Smith, Alan Ruff, Marty Ruff, and Josie Ruff; and many loving great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2022, at Beechwood Bible Holiness Church near English (Carefree). Brother Ben Watts and Brother Joey Pyle will officiate. Burial will be in Bloom Riddle Cemetery near Alton.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon, and after 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Zachary Culver, Trenton Culver, Travis Wolfe, Steven Smith, Caleb Smith, Christopher Smith, Alan Ruff, Marty Ruff, and Wayne Bowden.
