Jackie Paul "Jack" Merk

Jackie Paul “Jack” Merk, 85, of Mauckport, died Monday, February 22, 2021, in Indianapolis, Indiana.  He was born August 11, 1935, in Mauckport, to the late Bernard Crawford Merk and Joy Opal Best Merk.  Jack was a teacher of elementary school for 41 years from Kindergarten to grade 4 levels, for 12 years in East Gary, Indiana (later renamed Lake Station) and 29 years at Heth Washington School of South Harrison School Corporation.  He held most leadership positions in the Cub Scouts portion of the Boy Scouts of America organization and was awarded the National Scouters Award.  He was a member of many local, state and national teachers organizations, including being a local representative of the Indiana State Teacher’s Association and the National Education Association.  He was a member of the Parent Teacher Association and was a local representative of the city Parent Teacher Council.  Along with his wife, Patricia, he was a teacher for many years of Natural Family Planning for the Couple to Couple League sponsored by Father Strahl and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Corydon.  He was active in the leadership of 4-H Club organizations and volunteered with set up and judging of 4-H projects for the Harrison County Fair.  He was a member of the Heth Township Volunteer Fire Department for several years and also served as treasurer for a few years.  He was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Corydon.

He was preceded in death his parents; and his wife, Patricia Cecilia Kent Merk.

Survivors include his son, Brendan Paul Merk (Miranda Todd) of New Albany, Indiana; his daughters, Joy Marie Polk of Indianapolis and Malia Louise Glotzbach (Bryan) of New Albany; and his grandchildren, Caroline Merk, Nathan Merk, Gabriel Glotzbach, Emma Todd and Jackson Todd.

His funeral mass will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 1, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Corydon.  Father Kyle Rodden will officiate. Burial will be in Hyland Cemetery near Mauckport.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Monday at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Hyland Cemetery near Mauckport.
