Betty Lee Mathes Obituary

Betty Lee Harbaugh Mathes, 97, of Corydon, died Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at The Willows Assisted Living near Corydon.  She was born March 1, 1924, in Corydon, to the late Asa Lee and Edna Belle Crider Harbaugh.  She worked at Jeffersonville Quartermaster during WWII.  She married Wayne I. Mathes on August 18, 1946, and together they raised six children.

 

She was a member, former Sunday school teacher/mentor, and UMYF counselor at Old Capitol United Methodist Church in Corydon, a past president of American Legion Post 123 Women’s Auxiliary and a past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star #467.  She loved gardening, sewing, quilting, camping, and baking pies.  Her cherry pie won first prize at the Harrison County Fair years ago.  She and Wayne enjoyed wintering, fishing and boating in Okeechobee, Florida.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her oldest son, James Asa Mathes, Sr.; and sister, Doris Harbaugh Eckart.

 

Survivors include her sons, Joseph W. Mathes and Edward L. Mathes (Karen); her daughters, Mary Jean Mathes, Jane Ann Mathes and Ruth E. Schwartz (Steve); her grandchildren, Laura, Jackie (Michael), Jamie, Kalon, Sarah (Jerry), Jessica (Travis), Danny (Cory), Adam and Hannah; her great grandchildren, Courtney, Nicholas, Bailey, Brooklyn, Dale, Sadie, Landon, Jackson and Lexi; her sister, Jean Annis Harbaugh Wiseman; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 21, 2021, at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon.  Rev. Andy Hansen will officiate.  Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery near Corydon.

 

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Sunday and after 9:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

 

Pallbearers will be James Asa Mathes, Jr., Danny Mathes, Jerry Hunley, Adam Schwartz, Doug Henrickson and Michael Pittman.  Honorary pallbearer will be her great grandchildren.

 

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Old Capitol United Methodist Church.
