My apologies for this belated note - but your family has been in my prayers here in North Carolina. Julie, I know how tough it can be to lose a dad and so I especially am thinking of you and your mom. Joe will always be a great memory for Richard and me, going back through many Repair Affairs - and just seeing him at Wal-Mart and around Harrison County. Very much missed by many! May God comfort you with great memories!

I remember our family vacations to visit Joe and Lavern's place like they were yesterday. Joe , Lavern , and Joe's dad made our visit's memorable to say the least. I can remember taking a ride in the back of Joe's pickup going deep into the wood's for a tour of the property , and my dad (Dave Sr) ended up getting attacked by chiggers that came off of the tree's as we were brushing through them. Later, we went into town to get us kid's cowboy boots - I still remember the appearance of the town, as it was a true example of mid-west rural America. At some point during one of the family dinners, one of us kid's made a compliment/comment about Lavern's cooking , which ended up being an insult to our mom's cooking in the way it was said- but you know how kids can be. During the week one of the horse's we got to ride decided it would rather be in it's run in shed rather than being ridden, but I was still on it - close call on that one! Fond memories all - Joe will be missed sorely by all who knew him, and I'm sure he's found his way to heaven and looking over us all keeping a close eye on his loved ones. He'll always be with us . All our love to the family - chip

My name is Bobby Sherwood. I am the Dave Sherwood's youngest son from Kathy, his first wife who passed back around 2008. I hadn't seen any of Joe and his family since the mid 1970's, which was the last time we were all together and they came to visit our home in Middlehope, NY. Through the years, I would hear a little of how Jody, Johnny, Jimmy, Julie and Justin(who I never met), were doing. I believe my dad had visited at hour place through the years and kept in contact. Joe and his family were very humble and hospitable. I was very young when we all visited there, but I remember very much and they were all pleasant memories. I even remember, in the attic in their house, me and Jimmy were up there and I had noticed this picture of Joe and Lavern on a decorative plate that had a depiction of a wedding photo on it. I saw such a strength of endearing love in that depiction. I always hoped that it stayed that way in reality over the years too. It's something that I would have thought like that back when I was less than 10 years old then. Such a great family that I remember. Joe always came across to me as such an honorable, hardworking, kind, caring, gentle, and loving person. God Bless.

Joe was my oldest living Marine buddy. We served aboard the same Navy ship (LSD -20 USS Donor)) in the Mediterranean,, and other ships in the Caribbean and in Panama. My first wife Kathy and our sons Chip, Stephen & Bobby visited Joe & LaVerne several times, and always received a King's welcome.. My 2nd wife Sara and our son Victor visited with the Bliss's just after Victor was born, and on another visit Joe took him arrow head hunting. Joe was the kind of guy you could depend upon, he was an impeccable man of his word and LaVern's cooking was out of this world - GREAT! May God and our Savior Jesus grant LaVerne and Joe's family peace, I am sure we all will have a hole in our heart due to his passing. Dave (Sgt/USMC) and Sara Sherwood.

I am sorry we could not make it to the Funeral Home. We didn't know your dad, but from all the posts we have seen, we really wish we had. Prayers for you and your family during this difficult time.

Joe was an original. One of a dying breed of men that walked the walk. His legacy lives on in the love of outdoors that he sparked in so many. My sincere sympathy to all of his family.
