Mary Evelyn Byerly, 89, of Elizabeth, died Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at Corydon Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Corydon.  She was born January 20, 1927, in Elizabeth, Indiana, to the late Cody and Gladys Brinkman Payton.  She was formerly employed at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Green Valley Care Center in New Albany, and the Corydon Nursing Home and was a member of the Elizabeth First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dallas R. Byerly; her daughter, Beverly J. Coleman; and her brothers, Joseph E., Lewis W. and Vernon L. Payton.

Survivors include her sons, Stanley E. Coleman of Milltown, Indiana, Anthony W. Coleman of Corydon and Dallas G. Coleman of Elizabeth; her daughter, Opal M. Shappie of San Antonio, Texas; her sister, Helen R. Carter of Clarksville, Indiana; her grandchildren, Vincent Leahy, Christopher Nolan, Lisa G. Jones, Dennis Coleman, Anthony Coleman, Jr., John Coleman, Rachel Coleman and William Coleman; and her great great grandson, John Vincent Leahy.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon.  Tom Dennison will officiate.  Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Elizabeth.

Visitation will be from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and after 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
